Opti Beginners Learning about Irons

Wind!

One of the first breezy mornings we've had so far this summer, quite exciting for the beginner classes! Lasers practiced hiking, (and a good amount of flipping too) optis learned how to get out of irons, and the guppies explored wickhams beach.

Heat Wave

With temperatures through the roof this week we've been doing everything down at the club to stay cool. 2 new tent-like things have been put up for extra shade on the front deck, and in classes we've been practicing capsizing so we don't completely fry out on the boats.

Thanks to Deborah Carroll and Pat Rochon for helping keep kids and instructors refreshed with iced tea and ice pops!

Tomorrow we're sending 4 opti racers along with instructor/race coach Mark Rickabaugh to teach Shelter Island a thing or two about sailing at their Opti Invitational regatta. Good luck to them!

4th of July Parade

Many Old Cove kids participated in the New Suffolk 4th of July parade today in our float with the theme "Under the Sea." Kids (and instructors!) were dressed as sharks, octopus, lobsters, crabs, fish, snorkelers, jellyfish, and even a ninja sea turtle. We marched through town with a decorated truck, 420, and golf cart while singing Alix Suter's token "Bay Adventurers" song and chanting "OCYC!" and it was all worth the effort because we came in 2nd place in the judging!!

Thanks to everyone for coming out, it was a lot of fun!

Mark vs. Swan

Bay Adventures started off with excitement as a swan decided to stop by Old Cove. Some of the kids donated some of their snacks to feed it and when the fun was over instructor Mark took charge and led it safely away. pictures to follow...

We then sailed 420s over and explored the whale dunes at low tide and had some rock skipping contests.

Good amount of breeze for club racing now, should be a good afternoon!

The Beginning

Summer is in full force with all the kids down at the yacht club now for lessons.

Monday and Tuesday were HOT and sunny but everyone survived and today was nice and cool.

Highlights of this week so far include opti and 420 beginner classes sailing the J24, with some opti beginners and even guppies getting to steer, food names, and learning knots and practicing them on instructors. (see picture!)

Summer 2010!

Welcome to the first (I think..) Old Cove blog!

I'm Meredith, the head instructor this year, and I'll be updating this blog as often as I can to give you some insight as to what the kids are doing during their classes. The updates will probably come at the end of the day once I'm back in internet range unless I can figure out how to update via phone!

Stay tuned and I hope you enjoy!
